Who is behind the emf-compass?
The emf-compass is a curated collection of links from the Research Foundation for Electricity and Mobile Communications (FSM) at ETH Zurich.
Selection of links and use of AI
All links offered via emf-compass are selected individually by FSM. AI is used in some cases to generate detailed information about the links, which is indicated accordingly. External links are provided solely for informational purposes. Responsibility for the content of linked sites lies with the respective providers; this does not necessarily imply our endorsement or support of such content.
Foundation
The Swiss Research Foundation for Electricity and Mobile Communication (FSM), founded in 2003, is a non-profit foundation with the purpose of promoting scientific research on the opportunities and risks of technologies that generate or use electromagnetic fields (EMF). This includes all radio and power technologies. Further objectives of the FSM are the publication of research results in scientific organs and the communication of research facts and expertise on the subject of EMF in society.
Supervision
The Swiss Research Foundation for Electricity and Mobile Communication (FSM) is subject to the supervision of the Federal Foundation Supervisory Authority (ESA).
Foundation Board
According to the Deed of the Foundation, the Board includes the scientific community (usually four seats for representatives from universities), the industrial sponsors (one seat combined), the federal authorities (one seat combined for FOEN, FOPH, OFCOM, SFOE) and the NGOs (one seat combined). The members of the Board work on an honorary basis.
Research funding
The Research Foundation for Electricity and Mobile Communications (FSM) promotes innovative research projects that address current issues relating to electromagnetic fields in connection with electricity and radio technologies, particularly issues concerning the long-term implications for society, the environment, and health. In the field of research, we see ourselves as an organization with an international focus. Our institutional ties to ETH Zurich provide us with additional and crucial support in maintaining our international orientation.
Independence of research
The FSM's funds are allocated solely on the basis of scientific criteria, completely independently of the foundation's donors. Neither sponsors nor supporters of the FSM are represented on the Scientific Committee or have any insight into its work. Nor can they contest its decisions.
Communication
We are also involved in publishing and communicating research findings. We are the competent point of contact for individuals and institutions from politics, business, and civil society for questions relating to electromagnetic fields.
Financing
The FSM is financially supported by sponsors and patrons as well as ETH Zurich. Some of our events receive financial support from federal agencies (FOEN, FOPH, OFCOM, and SFOE). The Scientific Committee decides on the allocation of research funds. The donors have no seat on the committee, nor are they informed about its deliberations. This ensures the absolute independence of all funding decisions. The costs for providing and operating the emf-compass are covered by the foundation's general budget.
