Fact Sheets non-ionizing radiation - FOPH

https://www.bag.admin.ch/en/fact-sheets-nir

Fact Sheets NIR provide scientific information on appliances emitting non-ionising radiation such as UV devices, lasers, microwave ovens, and electromagnetic fields. They address health risks, safety guidelines, legal regulations, and exposure mitigation to ensure informed use and protection.

The fact sheets published by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) provide comprehensive information on the risks associated with non-ionizing radiation and how to handle it safely, particularly with regard to UV radiation, laser radiation, and electromagnetic fields. A key focus is on UV radiation emitted by devices such as tanning beds or UV germicidal lamps. Tanning beds generate strong ultraviolet radiation, which has been proven to cause cancer, premature skin aging, and burns. Since 2019, the Ordinance on Protection against Hazards from Non-Ionizing Radiation and Sound (V-NISSG) has regulated the operation of tanning beds to protect users, particularly adolescents and at-risk groups. UV germicidal lamps for private use also pose health risks, such as skin and eye damage, due to improper use.
