The German Commission on Radiological Protection (SSK) advises the Federal Ministry for the Environment on radiological safety, emergency response, and medical radiation protection. It develops guidelines, risk assessments, and protection strategies for nuclear and radiation-related issues.

The German Commission on Radiological Protection (SSK) serves as an advisory board to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). The commission provides expert guidance on issues related to radiological protection to ensure safety and health in environments exposed to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Structured into various specialized committees, the SSK covers areas including Radiation Risk, Radiological Protection in Medicine, Radioecology, Radiological Protection Technology, Emergency Management, Non-ionizing Radiation, and Applied Radiation Protection particularly in nuclear installations. Additionally, a Steering Committee addresses studies related to German uranium mining. The commission's members and committees work collaboratively to develop recommendations and regulations based on scientific evidence. The SSK issues current publications such as recommended typical values for patient exposure in diagnostic X-ray applications and protection strategies in the event of a nuclear detonation, reflecting its ongoing commitment to addressing emerging radiological challenges. The organization functions with a clear mandate, statutes, and supported by a scientific secretariat, ensuring transparency and rigorous scientific methodology in its advisory role. The SSK website also provides access to its history, statutes, publications, news, and press releases from related governmental bodies, facilitating public and professional engagement.
